Strategy – Asking Questions

10.1. READING STRATEGY: ASKING QUESTIONS
Asking questions is something that you do on a daily basis in many different areas of your personal and academic life. Questions can be effective because they:

-give readers a purpose for reading
-focus readers’ attention on what they are to learn
-help readers to think actively as they read
-encourage readers to monitor their comprehension
-help readers to review content and relate what they have learned to    what they already know.

If you ask questions when you read (before, during, and after reading) it will certainly help you to make better predictions about the text and also to better understand what you are reading.

10.2. THE “RIGHT THERE QUESTION” STRATEGY
Are questions that are found right in the text which ask the reader to find the one right answer located in one place as a word or as a sentence in the passage. Example: Who is Frog’s friend? Answer: Toad.

These questions will help you easily locate specific information. These questions ask who, what, where, when, how, why. You will find the answers to these questions Right There in the text you’re reading.
